TORAH AND SWASTIKA - A SEYFER-TOYRE UN A HAKN-KREYTS

Lyrics: Leyb Diament (1908 – after 1998)

Music: Psoy Korolenko

Arrangement: Beth Silver

English translation and transliteration: Eli Jany

The song is based on real-life events that took place in Kalisz, Poland, in 1939. According to eyewitnesses,“The Germans temporarily housed Polish prisoners of war in the Great Synagogue and the Talmud Torah Building of Kalisz. There were many cases of desecration by them. Thus, they removed the Torah scrolls from the synagogues at 21 and 29 Ciasna Street and burnt them in the courtyards; and Jewish girls were ordered to dance around the fire. They destroyed another synagogue and flung the Torah scrolls and religious literature into the river, with blows and shooting" (https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kalisz1/kalisz1.html, p.286). To our knowledge, this is the only Yiddish song about the atrocity.

English

Yiddish Transliteration

Could I ever forget, oy,

for even a minute,

how in Kalisz poured

rivers of Jewish blood.

I’ll remember until I die

that dark night,

when he, Hitler, killed

masses of Jews.

And I will not and have not

lost my mind.

The murderers, oy,

found a Torah scroll.

I’ll remember until I die…

The street was

besieged by the Hitlers.

And then began, oy,

the great fury.

I’ll remember until I die…

None of the Jews

remained at home;

they drove them

to Ciasny twenty-one.

I’ll remember until I die…

And they forced them to crawl

on all fours, quickly.

And as they crawled, they made them, oy,

bark like dogs.

I’ll remember until I die…

They came to the house

with shame and with blows.

Then they cut swastikas

into their heads.

I’ll remember until I die…

And they desecrated the Torah

and defiled it hideously,

and with mockery they

burned it on a bonfire.

I’ll remember until I die…

I ask that these simple words

be written down in a book,

so the horror, for distant generations,

will remain in a book.

I’ll remember until I die…

And when the bitter war

comes to an end,

you shouldn’t leave a single soul

of the Hitlers.

I’ll remember until I die….
